She has one specific tip to share with any lawyers who are looking to make a change with their legal careers – a tip that will completely stunt their success if ignored.

First, let’s acknowledge that the face of lawyers in transition has changed over the years.

In 2008, 2009 and 2010, a lawyer in transition referred to an attorney who could not find a job in the legal services world – either they were fresh out of law school or they had been laid off.

Today, lawyers in transition refers to attorneys who:

  1. have a position but want to lateral out to another position within the legal services field – perhaps moving into a corporate counsel position, or vice versa.
  2. want to leave the professional all together and want to explore how their legal training and skill-set can transition them into another position
  3. want to create their own virtual law firm, or who want to move from a larger firm into a smaller firm

No matter what kind of transition attorneys are facing, they must keep in touch with their network.  Kimberly shares more about this in the video below. 

All attorneys and business owners are in a relationship building business. Lawyers in any of these transition scenarios above will experience a significant stunt to their progress if they don’t keep in touch with their network and actively work at expanding their network.

Many attorneys in transition (wrongly) think they have limited resources as they move from one area to another.  This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Kimberly advises that attorneys in transition must leverage their your social media networks (especially LinkedIn) and online reputations.  LinkedIn offers attorneys incredible value, power and strength and if fully leveraged, allows attorneys to reach their transition destination much faster.
